Foreign Accounts Paid by Facebook to Push Alberta Separatism, CBC Investigation Finds

The Chronicler Canada Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

A CBC News investigation has exposed a network of overseas accounts actively promoting Alberta separatism in popular Facebook independence groups — and being paid by Meta’s own monetization program to do so. The investigation identified at least 14 accounts operated by people outside Canada, including several in Indonesia and Pakistan, who have been posting in groups with more than 100,000 members. In some cases, the accounts stole content from real Albertan separatists, impersonating them to generate engagement and monetization revenue. One profiled account, operating under the name Nieta Aqila, posted fabricated stories about canvassing for the independence petition — including claims of being harassed and having rocks thrown at her — while simultaneously advertising homemade noodles for sale and disclosing the payments she received from Meta. CBC found the account earned approximately $14 USD in a single month through Facebook’s creator monetization program.

Researchers say the network fits a broader pattern of foreign actors exploiting Canadian political divisions for profit. A DisinfoWatch report published in May warned that overseas operators — ranging from Kremlin-aligned networks to profit-driven AI content farms — have increasingly targeted Alberta separatism as a lucrative niche. The Pravda News Network, a series of Russian state-aligned sites, published 67 items referencing Alberta or the “51st state” between late 2025 and April 2026, compared with only 14 mentions of Ontario. The timing is significant: Elections Alberta has set a provincial referendum on independence for October 19, 2026, giving foreign and domestic actors a clear window to amplify division before ballots are cast. Premier Danielle Smith has said she does not support leaving Canada, though her government has lowered procedural barriers for citizen-led referendum efforts. Indigenous leaders have separately challenged the legality of any secession process, arguing it cannot proceed without treaty consultations.

N.L. Proposes Staggered School Start Times to Save $5–6 Million Annually

The Chronicler Canada Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is seeking public feedback on a proposal to change school start and end times at 37 schools across the province, with the transport minister saying the adjustment could generate savings of between $5 million and $6 million per year. NL Schools sent a survey to families last week outlining the proposed scheduling changes, which are designed to improve the efficiency of the school bus network by allowing more routes to be served by the same buses at staggered times. The proposal follows a broader effort by the provincial government to reduce operational costs in the education sector without eliminating programs or positions. Transport Minister Laura Howells confirmed the consultations are underway, emphasizing that feedback from families would be critical to shaping the final decision on whether and how to proceed.

The proposal has drawn cautious interest from parent groups, who say cost savings are welcome but want assurances that earlier or later start times will not create hardship for working families or undermine student attendance. Child development researchers have generally noted that adolescents benefit from later start times, while younger children tend to do better earlier in the day. The government has not specified the direction of the proposed changes — whether schools would start earlier or later — nor confirmed a timeline for a final decision. The survey is open to all families with children enrolled in the affected schools. Newfoundland and Labrador has faced persistent fiscal pressure in recent years, and the transport ministry has identified school bus operations as one of several areas where structural savings are achievable.

Man Killed in Surrey Office Building Was Alleged Bishnoi Gang Handler, CBC Investigation Reveals

The Chronicler Canada Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

A man shot dead in broad daylight at an office building in Surrey, British Columbia, last month was an alleged “main handler” for the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, according to sources who spoke to CBC’s fifth estate investigative program. The victim has been identified as Gurvikramjeet Singh Warring, 35, who reportedly operated under multiple aliases and was known to many as “Sam.” Sources allege Warring was connected to cricket match-fixing and immigration fraud in addition to his alleged organized crime ties. He was killed in a targeted attack at the office building in May, in what a former Member of Parliament who works in the same building described as a ruthlessly professional execution. “This has a very different feel to it, where individuals just walk in, kill someone and then walk out,” said Jinny Sims, who now hosts a radio program and was in the building at the time of the shooting.

The killing is the latest in an escalating wave of gang-related violence in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland attributed to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a violent transnational criminal organization based in India that Canada has designated as a terrorist entity. The day after Warring’s death, a social media post from an account appearing to belong to rival Indian gang leader Rohit Godara claimed responsibility. The fifth estate investigation also found alleged connections between Warring and cricket match-fixing networks, adding an international dimension to the case. The Bishnoi gang rose to international notoriety following the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey — an event that triggered a major Canada-India diplomatic rupture. The RCMP has previously alleged that India’s government used organized crime elements, including the Bishnoi network, to target members of the South Asian diaspora in Canada.

Ottawa Launches Public Consultations on Billy Bishop Airport as Province Pushes Expansion

The Chronicler GTA Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

The federal government has opened public consultations on the future of Toronto’s Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, saying all Canadians are welcome to participate online or by mail until July 24. The announcement from Transport Canada follows Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s move to expand the island airport into a full jet-capable facility that could handle up to 10 million passengers annually, up from the current 1.7 million. The provincial government recently passed legislation allowing it to take over the City of Toronto’s share in the tripartite agreement that has governed the airport lands since 1983, effectively sidelining city council from the decision-making process.

Transport Canada said it is committed to working with provincial and municipal governments, Indigenous Peoples, NAV Canada, and the Toronto Port Authority in gathering feedback. The Toronto Port Authority has said the expansion could cost between $4 billion and $5 billion over 25 years and would require a runway as long as 1.83 kilometres. A recent city staff report warned that thousands of homes along the waterfront could be affected and that the number of residents under flight paths could increase by approximately 25 per cent. Passenger numbers at Billy Bishop have declined from a peak of 2.8 million in 2017–18 to 1.7 million in 2025. Premier Ford has said the expanded airport could contribute $8.5 billion annually to Canada’s GDP. Prime Minister Carney has not yet stated a final position on the project.

Rajasthan Government Orders High-Level Probe After C-Section Deaths at Kota Hospital

The Chronicler India Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

The Rajasthan government has ordered a high-level inquiry and constituted a specialist medical board after a woman died and five others remained in critical condition following caesarean deliveries at New Medical College Hospital in Kota. The six women developed serious kidney-related complications within eight to ten hours of undergoing C-section surgeries on the same night, prompting the government to immediately close the post-operative gynaecology ward and dispatch a team of four specialist doctors from Sawai Man Singh Medical College in Jaipur. Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar directed the intervention and said strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence. The deceased has been identified as Paya, with the remaining five patients admitted to the Nephrology ICU at the Super Specialty Hospital in Kota under specialist supervision.

Families of the affected women have alleged medical negligence, with some pointing to a possible adverse drug reaction or infection as the cause of the widespread complications. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited the hospital to review the care being provided. The state Drug Controller subsequently ordered 24 medicines and medical devices used in the procedures to be pulled from use at government hospitals pending laboratory testing. Principal Secretary for Medical Education Gayatri Rathore said the probe would be comprehensive, time-bound, and conducted with full transparency. Preliminary findings have reportedly pointed to negligence by doctors and nursing staff, following which disciplinary action was initiated against several officials and employees.

TMC Crisis Deepens as Rebel MPs Form NDA Bloc, Mamata Takes Legal Fight to Calcutta High Court

The Chronicler India Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Mamata Banerjee’s grip on the Trinamool Congress continued to crumble on Monday as dissident Members of Parliament moved to form a separate parliamentary bloc aligned with the NDA, while her faction simultaneously sought judicial intervention from the Calcutta High Court to halt developments in the West Bengal Assembly. The twin fronts mark the most significant challenge to Banerjee’s authority since she founded the TMC nearly three decades ago. The collapse follows the BJP’s sweeping 207-seat victory in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly on May 4, in which Banerjee herself lost her Bhabanipur seat to former aide Suvendu Adhikari, now Chief Minister.

More than 58 of the TMC’s 80 newly elected MLAs have already broken ranks, backing expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition in the state legislature. On Monday, approximately 20 Lok Sabha MPs led by veteran MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar met Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi and signalled they would formally write to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to join the NDA bloc. Mamata’s camp challenged the Assembly Speaker’s recognition of Ritabrata Banerjee as LoP at the Calcutta High Court, which agreed to hear the matter on June 11. The TMC crisis has drawn comparisons to the 2022 Shiv Sena split in Maharashtra, in which Eknath Shinde’s rebellion successfully claimed the party’s name and electoral symbol.

Patna Court Stays Arrest of Educator Khan Sir in Coaching Centre Firing Case

The Chronicler India Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

A Patna district court has granted interim protection from arrest to popular educator and YouTuber Faisal Khan, widely known as Khan Sir, in connection with a criminal case arising from a violent incident outside his coaching institute on the night of June 2. The Principal District and Sessions Judge passed the order on Khan Sir’s anticipatory bail application, staying all coercive action against him and directing the state to produce the case diary and details of his criminal history. The matter has been listed for further hearing on June 20. Khan Sir’s lawyer Arvind Kumar Mouar told reporters the relief means his client will not face arrest while cooperating with investigating authorities.

The case stems from an incident in which a group of fifteen to twenty individuals allegedly gathered outside Khan Global Studies in Patna’s Musallahpur Hat area, vandalising the premises and assaulting a security guard. Videos subsequently circulated on social media appearing to show two private security guards employed by the institute firing shots in the air during the confrontation. Police arrested the two guards — Deepak Kumar and Talebar Singh — on June 4, and their statements, along with CCTV footage, allegedly implicate Khan Sir as having been present and having directed the firing. The FIR includes charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita including attempt to murder and Arms Act violations. Khan Sir, one of India’s most-followed educators on YouTube with tens of millions of subscribers, has denied ordering his guards to fire.

🌎 Lead Story — Iran War, Day 102

Trump Warns Netanyahu He Could Be Left ‘On Your Own’ as Israel-Iran Ceasefire Enters Fragile New Phase

With Israel halting a planned strike on Tehran after a direct call from the President, and Iran pausing its own campaign, the ceasefire holds — but on thinning ice. A deepening public rift between Washington and Jerusalem now defines the war’s fourth month.
The Chronicler World Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran entered a precarious new phase on Monday, Day 102 of the Iran War, as United States President Donald Trump issued his sharpest public warning yet to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — telling him that Israel could find itself “on your own very soon” if it continues to launch strikes that threaten to unravel the truce in place since April 8. The warning, first reported by Axios, came after Israel halted a significant planned strike on Tehran following a direct call between the two leaders, in which Trump urged Netanyahu to hold off after Iran signalled it would pause its own attacks. Israel subsequently struck southern Lebanon, complicating the ceasefire further: Iran had made suspension of its campaign against Israel conditional on Israel ending all attacks, explicitly including those in Lebanon.

The situation reflects a deepening public rift between Washington and Jerusalem over the management of a ceasefire that both sides have repeatedly tested to its limits. Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said repeated Israeli violations showed there was no genuine will to build trust, and warned the truce remains brittle. Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization separately confirmed that Iranian airspace has returned to normal conditions and that commercial flight operations are expected to resume — a signal that Tehran, for now, is choosing restraint. Iran’s foreign ministry indicated it has “no problem” pushing forward with peace talks, provided it is confident the United States is negotiating in good faith.

The ceasefire has been under significant strain since the worst round of escalations in months last weekend, when Israeli and Iranian forces traded strikes that resulted in the highest casualties since April. Israel struck what it described as military infrastructure in Tehran, while Iranian missiles targeted sites across northern and central Israel. Trump had convinced Netanyahu to abort a far larger planned strike on the Iranian capital, with Israeli sources and a US official confirming the president intervened directly. Israel acknowledged halting attacks on Iran — without formally accepting the term “ceasefire” — while insisting its operations in southern Lebanon would continue.

Analysts note that Trump’s public warnings to Netanyahu carry limited practical weight so long as the United States continues to supply weapons and diplomatic cover to Israel. Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies said that without concrete action behind the rhetoric — including a halt to arms transfers — Tehran has little reason to treat the statements as a meaningful shift in American policy. Netanyahu faces intense domestic pressure from coalition partners who have demanded continued military operations and oppose any settlement that leaves Iran’s nuclear programme intact. The war has now entered its fourth month, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining formally open but shipping insurance rates still significantly elevated due to regional instability.

🇨🇳 Xi Jinping Pledges ‘Powerful Momentum’ for China-North Korea Ties at Rare Pyongyang Summit

The Chronicler World Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have pledged to deepen their strategic partnership following a rare summit in Pyongyang, Xi’s first visit to North Korea in seven years and his first foreign trip of 2026. State media from both countries confirmed that the two leaders agreed to pursue closer strategic communication and cooperation across economics, agriculture, health, construction, science, and technology. Xi told Kim he aimed to inject “powerful momentum” into the relationship, according to Chinese state media outlet Xinhua. Kim called Xi “the greatest state guest” and said he views the Chinese leader’s choice of Pyongyang as his first overseas destination this year as the most meaningful expression of support for North Korea.

The summit, which marks the 65th anniversary of the China-North Korea mutual defence treaty, signals a concerted effort by Beijing to reassert its influence over Pyongyang at a moment when North Korea’s ties with Russia have grown significantly warmer. Kim has sent troops and materiel to support Russia’s war in Ukraine, reducing Beijing’s leverage over its traditional ally. North Korean state media made no mention of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme or its relations with the United States in reporting on the summit. Before Xi’s arrival, Kim had separately announced plans to increase North Korea’s nuclear production capacity. Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Beijing noted that state media in both capitals appeared to be sending a deliberate message that the China-North Korea relationship is stronger than ever.

🇺🇦 Russia Kills Five in Zaporizhia Strikes as Zelenskyy Hails ‘Very Positive’ Talks with US Envoys

The Chronicler World Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Russian forces killed five people and injured fourteen others in drone and artillery strikes on Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhia region early on Monday, the regional governor reported, even as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described recent talks with American and European leaders as offering fresh diplomatic momentum. Governor Ivan Fedorov said the attacks damaged infrastructure, residential buildings, and vehicles across the region. Separately, Russian strikes on energy infrastructure in the Odesa region caused power outages for more than a thousand customers. The attacks came just one day after Russia targeted a nuclear fuel storage facility near the defunct Chornobyl power plant.

Zelenskyy had spent the previous day in London, where he received the backing of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany — the so-called E3 group — in his call for direct ceasefire talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian president had extended an open letter invitation to Putin for a face-to-face meeting, which the Kremlin declined. Despite the rejection, Zelenskyy described his discussions with US envoys as “very positive” and expressed hope that the diplomatic track could be reinvigorated heading into the June deadline the Trump administration has set for a peace framework. The US has proposed hosting the next round of trilateral talks on American soil. Russia has declined to confirm its participation.

🇪🇸 Spain Sign Off World Cup Preparations with 3–1 Win Over Peru in Puebla

The Chronicler Sport Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Spain completed their 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations with a commanding 3–1 victory over Peru at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, Mexico on Monday, sending a clear message of intent ahead of a tournament that kicks off Thursday. The defending European champions were in control from the opening minute, with Mikel Oyarzabal firing a fierce strike from the edge of the area just 90 seconds in to set the tone. Pedri doubled the lead in the 32nd minute, converting a low cross from Ferran Torres into an empty net, before Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese inadvertently turned Yeremy Pino’s dangerous delivery into his own net early in the second half to make it 3–0. Jairo Vélez pulled one back for Peru on 66 minutes with a low finish, but Spain were never troubled.

The result will provide reassurance to coach Luis de la Fuente, whose squad was missing both Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams for the warm-up. Oyarzabal’s opener extended his scoring streak for the national team to six consecutive games. “It was a match to build momentum, and we’ve managed to do just that,” Pedri told reporters after the final whistle. De la Fuente cautioned that “being recognised as favourites guarantees nothing.” Spain open their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on June 15 in Atlanta, with Saudi Arabia and Uruguay also in the group. The World Cup tournament kicks off Thursday, June 11, in Mexico City.

🇺🇸 Wembanyama’s 32-Point Masterclass Lifts Spurs Past Knicks in Game 3 to Cut NBA Finals Deficit

The Chronicler Sport Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Victor Wembanyama delivered a 32-point, eight-rebound, six-assist performance as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115–111 in Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, cutting New York’s series lead to 2–1. The French phenom was dominant throughout, using his combination of size, skill, and court vision to create mismatches at both ends of the floor. Teammate Stephon Castle added a strong supporting performance as the Spurs earned their first road win of the series. The result snapped the Knicks’ remarkable 13-game postseason winning streak — the second-longest such run in a single postseason in NBA history — and injected genuine uncertainty into a series that had appeared to be drifting decisively toward New York.

The Knicks had won Games 1 and 2 at 105–95 and 105–104 respectively, with Jalen Brunson starring throughout. Game 4 takes place Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, with the Knicks still holding home-court advantage and seeking their first NBA championship since 1973. The Spurs are chasing their sixth title overall and their first since 2014. Should San Antonio win the series, they would become the first team to overcome a 2–0 deficit in NBA Finals history.

🇨🇦 Red Wings Captain Dylan Larkin Requests Trade, Names Florida, Minnesota and Vegas

The Chronicler Sport Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has formally requested a trade by submitting a three-team list of preferred destinations to the club, a person familiar with the discussions confirmed to The Associated Press. The 29-year-old Michigan native, who has spent his entire career in Detroit after being selected 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft, has named the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights as his preferred landing spots under his full no-trade clause. Larkin has five years remaining on an eight-year, $69.6 million contract carrying an annual cap hit of $8.7 million. The trade demand comes after his 11th season in Detroit — and his tenth straight without a playoff appearance, a drought that now stands as the NHL’s longest active run.

General Manager Steve Yzerman faces a significant challenge in completing any deal: all three teams on Larkin’s list are projected to be in the lower half of the league in available cap space next season. The Golden Knights — who currently hold a 2–1 series lead over the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final — rank 31st among the NHL’s 32 teams with just $4.6 million in available space. Larkin, a six-time 30-goal scorer, registered 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games this past season, his best offensive output to date.

No team has won back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Scaloni’s side will try to change that, with Messi — at 38, almost certainly in his final tournament — still the linchpin. Group J (Algeria, Austria, Jordan) is favourable. The question is whether an ageing spine can sustain a 48-team bracket. Opener: vs. Algeria, June 16, Kansas City.

France
Group I — Contenders
Deschamps has Mbappé at the peak of his powers, a midfield of Tchouaméni and Camavinga, and the deepest bench in the tournament. Group I (Senegal, Iraq, Norway) should be navigated cleanly. France have the squad to win on tactics alone and the firepower to win on instinct. Opener: vs. Senegal, June 16, East Rutherford, N.J.
🇧🇷
Brazil
Group C — South American Giant
After semi-final exits in 2018 and 2022, Brazil enter a new cycle under Dorival Júnior with Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo anchoring the attack. Group C includes Morocco — the team that stunned Portugal in Qatar — but Brazil are expected to advance. Whether the defensive structure can hold in the knockouts is the real question.
🇩🇪
Germany
Group E — Dark Horse
Nagelsmann’s side enter without pressure — and that may be their greatest asset. Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz are two of the most exciting midfielders in world football. Group E (Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador) is the most navigable draw any top-ranked side received. Germany open the entire tournament June 11 in Mexico City against Curaçao.

Bigger, Bolder, North American: How the 2026 World Cup Rewrites the Tournament’s Rules

The Chronicler Sport Desk · Tuesday, June 9, 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which opens Thursday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and concludes July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is a tournament of firsts on almost every front. For the first time in history, 48 national teams will compete — up from 32 in Qatar 2022 — across 104 matches in 16 stadiums spread across three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. That tri-nation hosting arrangement is itself unprecedented. No World Cup has ever been co-hosted by three nations, and the logistical and commercial ambition behind it reflects FIFA’s deliberate pivot toward maximising reach, revenue, and spectacle simultaneously.

The expansion from 32 to 48 teams required a structural reinvention. Rather than eight groups of four with two advancing, the 2026 format features twelve groups of four — labelled A through L — with the top two from each group advancing automatically. To those 24, FIFA adds the eight best third-placed finishers across all twelve groups, creating a Round of 32 with 32 teams. That round is entirely new to the World Cup; it means every team that survives their group enters a knockout stage before the Round of 16 even begins. For smaller nations, it represents a meaningful extra game at the tournament’s highest level. For title contenders, it adds fatigue and risk. A path to the final that previously required six wins now requires seven.

To prevent the four top-ranked nations from meeting before the semi-finals, FIFA implemented a seeding and bracketing system separating Spain (ranked 1st), Argentina (2nd), France (3rd), and England (4th) into distinct halves of the draw. Should all four reach the semis having won their groups, the matchups are effectively pre-ordained. The system is a concession to commercial logic — those are the games broadcasters and sponsors most want — but it has drawn criticism from those who argue it undermines the draw’s integrity. Canada opens their first-ever home World Cup on Friday, June 12, at BMO Field in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina, in what will be the most-watched domestic sporting moment in the country’s history. And for the first time in the tournament’s 96-year history, the final will feature a live halftime show: Shakira, Madonna, and BTS are confirmed as co-headliners at MetLife Stadium on July 19.
